Are Natural Oils Sufficient for Moisture?

Last updated:

Unlike natural oils, which lack moisture-attracting properties, substances such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea and aloe vera provide this. Natural oils primarily consist of fatty acids and other lipid components. Due to their molecular structure, natural oils cannot retain water and, in fact, have a tendency to repel it. As a result, natural oils may not effectively fulfill the moisturizing requirements of your skincare routine. It is essential to bear in mind that moisturization holds a paramount role in proper skincare.

So What Do Natural Oils Do?

Natural oils, such as rose hip, grapeseed, pomegranate seed, and jojoba oil, serve as excellent emollients. They effectively retain moisture and soften the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. However, for specific skin concerns like blemishes, acne, acne scars, dehydration, rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, it is advisable to incorporate targeted cosmetic products into your skincare routine.

It is not recommended to use natural oils during the day as their compatibility with sunscreen or water-based products may be compromised. Sun exposure can lead to pigmentation and/or allergic reactions. Instead, utilize natural oils as a moisturizer in the final step of your evening skincare routine to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintain moisture and softness in the skin.

If your skin is oily and prone to acne, it is advisable to opt for water-based formulas rather than incorporating natural oils into your routine. Natural oils can aggravate oily skin. They can also contribute to acne breakouts. Therefore, when choosing moisturizers or other skin care products, water-based options may better meet your skin’s needs.

Let’s remember!

As cosmetic products, “natural” oils are also made up of chemical compounds like any other substance. Nevertheless, compared to lab-formulated products, natural oils may pose a higher risk of allergies and toxic reactions. It is crucial to keep in mind the principle that “the dose makes the poison.” Exercising caution while using natural oils and ensuring their appropriate dosage can mitigate these risks. To ensure optimal safety, it is wise to educate yourself on topics such as carrier oils, essential oils, chemical structures, and safe use, and to purchase products from reputable companies.
